Why are we doing clean installs?
- If you are upgrading from XP, you hav no choice.
- If you upgrade from Vista, an automated process for the upgrade is available, fut as documented, here and here, it will mostly create special headaches for the user down the road, and it can cake upwards of 20 hours to complete (vs. ~1 hour for clean install).
Clean installs have other benefits, such as they double as the best anti-virus procedure ever, wiping out all stored data (with the exception of backed up data for transfer) and leaving the user with a squeaky clean, brand new operating system. As a tech, I generally clean install my personal system once a year or so, as it keeps my computer performing like new.
